i wasn't here on this day 7 years ago. i was back home, in college, and probably fast asleep when russ called and woke me up, demanding i turn on cnn. i NEVER watch the news. and he knows that. so for him to drag me out of bed for that means something was either completely hilarious or terribly wrong. but the sound of his voice told me i wasn't going to like it.
i barged into my parents' room and turned the tv on. my dad was yelling, saying i'd gone mad for coming in so late at night. as the picture cleared, it showed the plane hit the first tower. and we were all silenced. it wasn't so much about the worry about the possibility of a further worsening of our country's economy but the fear that i could lose someone dear.
most of my family was living here, and a lot of my cousins worked around the area. pat was even rumored to have volunteered to drive an ambulance back and forth. no one could get a hold of him though. apparently, reception in the city had bogged down. and no vehicles were allowed in or out of the city for a while. but when it was all over, we had learned that everyone was safe. we had lost some friends that day though, either helping out or being trapped in. yes, it was a tragedy.
i'm very grateful that my family is still intact. but i still mourn for those who lost loved ones that day. i do not know most of their faces, i do not know most of their names. but i know loss. and it's never a pretty sight.
i give a moment of silence for all those who passed away on this day 7 years ago.
you're still missed.
