with the breakthrough of high school musical, movie companies have been milking the genre/style for what it's worth.
just recently, i saw both american mall and camp rock. and i have to say that american mall sucked so bad that i didn't even finish the movie (and i'm the type of audience that sees things to the end, no matter how bad it is). the actors did not live up to the images they portrayed. acting was terrible (whoever was in charge of casting this movie obviously just banked on a vanessa hudgens look-a-like to carry the movie when it simply wasn't enough). dancing was excruciating to watch. and the songs sounded so amateur. when high school musical came out, you know that the songs were well-thought out, the choreography was intense and precise, and the whole musical was fun. clearly, american mall did not have a fighting chance.
camp rock, however, did fairly well. i absolutely cannot stand the jonas brothers, so for me to say i enjoyed it, says a lot. the songs were well-written. the acting was actually believable. the characters, though cliche, were well-developed. and the plot, though predictable, was still enjoyable.
it, kind of, makes me want to go back to high school. i mean, i'm not saying i didn't enjoy it. i would have to say i made great memories back in those days. but sometimes i wish i had grown up in a system that had lockers, and cafeteria with bad food, and no uniforms, and running out of class the second the bell rings, and boys (lol), and snotty cheerleader popular girls, and mean girls, and everything else that wasn't in the philippine school system. yes, as stupid as this sounds, it all seems fascinating to me. but as someone wise said to me, "high school's over. let it go." haha.. so i'm letting go.... now.
on a completely different note, i've changed. i admit i had my weak and stupid moments. they're not exactly things i should be proud of, but i don't regret them at all. i've learned from them. i've made changes to my life because i wanted to, for myself. and i'd like to think it was for the better. i changed and chose to better who i WAS. that should say enough about who i AM.
